OLIVIA PALERMO

Get to know her in our version of 73 questions

CLEO (Malaysia) - - FRONT PAGE -

In 2007, a website, socialiterank.com, and 21-year-old Olivia Palermo were thrust into the spotlight for what was essentially a bitchy online “slam book” gone wrong. The website published a post claiming that Palermo had sent an email to over 50 socialites, begging them to accept her into their circles. She denied the claims, and filed a lawsuit against socialiterank.com. After the drama died down a year later, Palermo went on to be cast in The City, an MTV reality series. She also began a relationship with model Johannes Huebl. Since then, she’s signed as a talent, collaborated with top fashion and beauty brands, and even appeared as a guest judge on Project Runway. In 2013, Huebl proposed to her, and in June of 2014, the pair wed. Focusing on developing her website, and working with brands like Ciaté, Aquazzura and Westward Leaning to develop exclusive collections, Palermo has secured her spot among NYC’s glitterati. Here, she talks about her sense of style, her favourite accessories, and having ultra-fashionable parents.

What are your tips for wearing accessories well?

Every day I’m inspired by one piece, and kind of work my outfit through that – it’s a great way to accessorise. Start with the accessory, and then dress accordingly. And then, even if it’s a little bit and you have a simple, minimalistic outfit, just a little touch of a belt, a ring or a bracelet will do wonders. It gives the outfit your own personal touch.

What’s the one accessory that really brings an outfit to life? Is the statement necklace always key?

It really depends on the outfit and what it is. You always have to have that one thing. I always love a great belt, because you can cinch it and it gives the outfit a little style, and I guess a bit of something else – a little pop.

Do you collect anything?

Accessories. I love a great accessory. And clothes.

How did you start your accessories collection?

My mother and my aunt have a very good background in jewellery, so I was fortunate to get a deep understanding of it at a young age. It’s a great way to tie an outfit together.

What type of accessories do you love most?

I love a great earring, a big cuff and a cocktail ring.

Tried any DIY fashion projects recently?

Yes, a little bit. There are so many things you can do with a pair of jeans. My assistant came up with a really nice one the other day. We might put it on my website, oliviapalermo.com.

Do you get any fashion tips from your dad?

He has that old-school style to him. I love that! He’s always properly dressed – pocket squares and everything.

What are your rules for mixing and matching eclectic, stand-out pieces?

It’s really all about what catches your eye. We do it a lot on my website. We did it for one of our posts, which was a Geo story. It’s about different pops of colours, different patterns, textures and so forth, and how to play it up with some good solid accessories.

Got any style tips for our readers?

I really focus on pants, because I’m always cold during the winter. And because I’m always cold, and I figure every other girl in New York is probably freezing, too. I like to play with colour and add a little sparkle.

What’s your power colour?

I love mint green – it’s a great colour. I always seem to go to that. It’s a nice, fresh colour, I think.

Give us your top three beauty tricks.

I love Vaseline to take off eye make-up. It’s old-school, but it seems to work very well for me. I use SK-II for moisturising. I prefer its amazing serums. Also, drink enough water to stay healthy and hydrated.

Who does your hair?

Andre Davis, at Julian Farel on 57th Street. He’s been doing my hair for almost 10 years now. He’s a genius! Nobody cuts and colours my hair except for Andre – that’s it. I’m very lucky to have an amazing stylist in Europe, whom I work with, who does the styling when I have editorial shoots with bigger outlets. I have a very good team behind me.

I love a pop of colour – red is sort of my signature.

What major hair trends are you looking forward to trying this season?

I love great runway inspirations, but on an everyday basis, it’s fun to change it up a little. I think you have to wear your hair how you wear it every day because that’s when you look best. That’s sort of my motto, and what I always go back to.

How about a braid or a side part?

Oh, I do that all the time! A great little side braid is really cute. Adding a little highlight to play with in the sun – that’s nice as well. Yeah, I’m kind of mid-length girl – not too long. I’m can’t do super-long hair.

Any new hair products you’re loving?

Julian Farel has this incredible vitamin restore product that I highly recommend for everybody.

What are your manicure tips?

I keep my nails very healthy. I get a manicure once a week, and it always makes me feel a little bit better. I love a pop of colour – red is sort of my signature. During the winter, I try to change it up and go for a deeper, more burgundy hue. In the summer, with a good tan, it’s quite nice to do a bright, fire engine red. Plus, manicures only last for four days max, and then you’ve got to get a new one. I personally really like colours from Essie.

What’s your favourite drugstore beauty product?

Vaseline – I swear by it! It’s great for eye make-up, it’s great if you have chapped lips. You know what else it’s great for? If you have a new shoe that has the ink rubbing off on your foot, smear on a little bit, take a towel to it, and it will come right off. It really gets dye off your skin.

What is your summer beauty must-have?

Sunscreen from Lancôme – it’s cancer-research approved, and great protection. SPF40 should be good enough protection.

Do you have summer diet tips?

I don’t really have tips. When I’m home, I go to Whole Foods and get a lot of fresh fruit. I eat healthy in general. I like to eat as organic as possible. When I can, I try to do Bikram yoga, so that’s about it.

How does that help you diet wise?

I just eat healthy. I don’t diet. I just continuously eat healthy. I make sure I eat healthily every day, and I think that can make a huge difference with your diet.

What are your beauty resolutions for 2015?

Sleep, mainly. Sleep is good. Have enough sleep. Just drink water, stay hydrated, maintain your skin, try to stay out of the sun – a little colour is healthy, but not too much. And always use a good moisturiser for hydrating. I use SK-II to get my skin feeling and staying moist.

What are your pop culture guilty pleasures?

Johannes and I are big movie buffs. So we’re always watching something or another. I like law stuff.

What are you working on, right now?

Right now, my focus is to continue building my website, and making it the best we can.
