Forever Young

With its latest launch, Laneige reverses the hands of time, and brings back what once was ours. By Jolin Kwok.

The only youth elixir your skin truly needs.

I’m the lucky one with clear skin, or so that’s how my friends remember me. As my mum would proudly declare to any aesthetician who dares suggest I “try” any anti-ageing products, I’m just 20-something, I’m still so young, these are things I simply (luckily) don’t need.

Or do I? I mean, nature’s gift is one thing. But when you count in deskbound duties from dawn till dusk, for hours on end, spanning days, months, if not decades, ever since Primary One – kiasu Asian parents- mah – and especially since I signed my adult life away to the eternal rat race … those sleepless nights do add up. Like rings in a maturing tree trunk, you can count the damage by the deepening lines on my neck – ghastly; my tired reflection was like the proverbial fly in the soup that was the pristine bathroom mirror of my beautiful hotel room. Laneige threw a splendid party last year at the swanky artsy The South Beach hotel in Singapore, inviting members of the media from this side of the globe to check out its latest, upgraded youth elixirs. But vanity or press perks wasn’t really what made me glad to attend. Fresh air out of the office aside, in fact, the first things I noticed were the psychedelic grand entrance of the hotel lobby – a seven-foot tall Lee Lee Nam masterpiece that greeted passers-by like a mesmerising trippy Windows screensaver – and the kaleidoscopic lift interiors of underwater sea creatures by Philippe Starck. Just like that, I became 10 years younger.
