The Real Deal
The De Fam girls hook up with Brandon Beal for the summer.
#teamCLEO gets in between De Fam’s and Brandon Beal’s summer fling ...
What happens when you put the group behind the Malaysian hit single “Supergirls” with the guy responsible for “Twerk It Like Miley”? You get an infectious, fun-filled, summer-time jam bursting with pop, hip-hop and mid tempo dance tones. #teamCLEO sat down with Brandon Beal and the De Fam girls – Fya, Azira and Manggis – to chat about how their song “With You” came to life.
Q How did this collaboration come about?
BRANDON: We were introduced by our labels, and after listening to their sound and putting it next to what’s going on with my music in Malaysia, it just made sense to bring everything together.
Q What’s the inspired the track?
BRANDON: Well, it’s a feel-good record that makes you feel like putting the [car] top down while you’ve got your sunglasses on.
It’s kind of based on the idea of being with this person that you always want to experience all the different walks of life with.
DE FAM: The song is actually open for individual interpretation. For us, it’s about life with each other and our journey as De Fam as we work together with our crew, friends, family and even our fans.
Q How was it like working on this project?
DE FAM: We were especially excited about the music video shoot because at the time, we didn’t know what was going to happen. We weren’t given any clues as to what the set would look like and we hadn’t even seen the storyboard, so we just went into it preparing to be surprised. It was awesome.
Q What do you hope to take away from this time together?
BRANDON: I think this collaboration could easily lead into something else, maybe even a tour. Our music is pretty similar since we’re both a mix of hiphop, pop and R&B. It just fits.
Q Are you saying you’ll tour together in the future?
BRANDON: Anything is possible; it’s just all about the day-to-day process of making it happen.
Q Did you ever expect to be where you are today?
DE FAM: Truthfully, no. We never saw ourselves being singers because our passion lies in dancing. Prior to this, we were backup dancers so we’re familiar with being onstage, but being at the front and centre of attention is a lot different. We still get stage fright sometimes, but we love what we do, no matter how challenging.
Q And how has the journey been so far?
DE FAM: It’s been a roller-coaster ride – it all happened so quickly. Our schedule is crazy tiring, but we’re not complaining – what we’re doing is really fun, we wouldn’t change a single thing.
