Male, geeky and sitting at a desk behind a leaning tower of pizza boxes. The stereotype surrounding the world of IT has been hard to kill, but thanks to a new gen of fierce female tech talent, the gender gap is closing fast. And we’re loving it. With the representation of women in computer-based careers gradually on the rise in recent times, what’s now proving a whole lot harder to squish is the preconception that coding is a skill needed only by those in tech-related industries. While launching the Australian Computer Society’s Australia’s Digital Pulse report in June last year, their Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull deemed digital literacy as important as reading and writing, urging even those of us without any programming gigs to up our HTML game, stat. In a world where more than three billion people are all connected to the Internet, and an economy that’s shifting toward an increased reliance on basically everything automated (*cough* robots), we get why. So, become fluent in code and your career will ‘like’ you forever.

Hey girl, it’s time to get with the programme!
