It might sound counter-in­tu­itive, but if you can’t sleep, don’t go to bed. “Ev­ery minute you spend awake, and out of your bed, in­creases the need for deep sleep, also known as your sleep drive,” says Dr Car­ney. “Spend­ing more time in bed tells the body that you need less rest.” In other words, don’t fluff the pil­low un­til your eye­lids feel heavy.
