“Kia Kaha is a Maori phrase which means “Be Strong”, enthuses Karen. “It reflects what I want for everyone: Just be strong. It’s that simple.” With gyms popping up everywhere these days, you might think it’s difficult to break into the industry, but Karen didn’t find many hindrances. “The fitness industry in Malaysia has evolved a lot over the past five years,” she says. “Malaysians don’t really look down on women in fitness”. According to her, those who think building muscles is “a guy thing” are also a minority nowadays. Karen affirms, “From my experience, people have treated me with great respect, and I believe that Malaysians are a progressive lot.”
