There are many rea­sons for some­one to be­come a ve­gan. Yet be­ing in Malaysia — where so much of its food cul­ture is cen­tred around meat and an­i­mal pro­duce — it surely begs the ques­tions ... Why did you be­come a ve­gan? “I de­cided on the ‘chal­lenge’ [of be­ing a ve­gan] be­cause I was very self­con­scious about my body im­age,” says Elina Na­su­tion, 21. “Then I de­cided to learn more, es­pe­cially about the im­pact [of hu­man ac­tiv­ity] on our health, the econ­omy and the en­vi­ron­ment.
