15 minutes with Wende Zomnir
The lipsticks aren’t the only thing making me go gaga. Urban Decay’s collaborations with celebrities have always elicited beauty frenzy everywhere, but nothing has made me swoon quite like the Ruby Rose and Urban Decay pairing.
One penetrating gaze from Ruby is enough to convince me to purchase the shades I never would’ve tried.
“I first learnt about Ruby from my stylist,” says Wende. “At that time, she had about 5,000 followers on Instagram. She has always been the embodiment of beauty with an edge — she’s beautiful, dangerous and fun. Plus, her Instagram feed is hilarious!”
So, will we be seeing more Urban Decay and Ruby Rose collabs soon?
“We had such a good time working together, and we want to take it to the next step,” enthuses Wende. “Hopefully, we might come up with something.”
So, a Ruby Rose Vice Vault isn’t on the docket now. But until then, I’ll whet my appetite by throwing my very own lipstick party with these new babies.
Urban Decay has come a long way since its first line of 10 lipsticks and 12 nail enamels — mixed and conceptualised in Wende’s Zomnir’s Laguna Beach bungalow. Now, 20 years later, it has built a reputation as the most badass brand in the business. At a time when pink, red and beige enslaved the prestige beauty market, Wende broke the mould by introducing unconventional colours such as shades of green and purple. And to really push the envelope, she stamped them with enticing names like “Roach”, “Smog”, “Oil Slick” and “Acid Rain”.
“Things are different now,” says Wende. “There are so many new processes, textures and pigments to work with. We’re also able to bring more make-up expertise to our market with YouTube.” Social media and YouTube has bridged the gap of online influencers and beauty editors. Through tutorials, challenges, unboxing and ‘get the look’ videos, they educate and empower. “My favourite thing about YouTubers is how aesthetically different they are. Some are more subtle, whereas others, more adventurous. Either way, you can still take away parts and pieces that suit you,” she points out. The opportunity to interview with Wende doesn’t come very often, so I had to ask: How we get the perfect pout? “Our lip pencils are lip primers, too,” reveals the beauty boss. “So fill in your lips completely before putting on your lipstick. It’ll help the colour stay longer, and it makes working with your lip shape more precise.” Duly noted!
Wende’s top shades? Rock Steady ( and Firebird, RM70 each. Nothing more befitting than a lipstick printed dress for this interview!
