WINTER IS COMING
If you need reasons to grab your passport and jet off to colder climes, Michael Kors has plenty in his autumn/ winter collection
Michael Kors has built an empire by catering for women who live the kind of jetsetting life where summer is endless, yet in many ways it’s the Autumn/Winter season when his talents really shine. Lush fabrics, sophisticated layering and rich colours are a natural playground for the New York designer who got his start dressing the women of the Upper East Side. Today, Michael Kors dresses women from Mumbai to Malaysia, yet all are united by their confidence, their global outlook and their frequent flyer miles. This season, Kors says he had two key words in mind while designing: strength and sensuality. These twin attributes rippled through every piece, so that even work-friendly skirts were tulipshaped to flash a glimpse of thigh.
Having dressed his customer since 1981, Kors knows her wardrobe has enough camel overcoats, work skirts and wide-legged trousers already, so this season every piece needed a fresh and compelling selling point. The result: a collection that feels more fashion forward than some of the past. The overcoat has arm slits so it can be worn across the shoulders without falling into a puddle, the blazers are oversized and soft-shouldered.
Sensuality of a less overt but no less appealing design could be found in the tone-on-tone looks, whether the cashmere sweater dress, woollen gloves, suede boots and studded bag all in a cool, pale grey, or the black midi skirt and cropped knit, worn with slouchy knee-high boots, cropped fur jacket, and waist-cinching belt.
The sexiest looks were the fringed and sequinned black dresses worn by Mica Arganaraz and Kendall Jenner; just the kind of cocktails-to-club pieces that every woman needs, and can never get enough of. But for the woman who can be a little too much (and is proud of it), the sarong-style, plunging dresses in liquid lame gold and silvered animal print will be must-haves.
Strength and sensuality carried into the Michael Michael Kors line, while the Michael Kors Access line of touchscreen smartwatches has a new addition, the Sofie (we also quite like the Grayson, for men).
It was, as always with Kors, a citysmart, sophisticated collection, but not without a sense of playfulness. Witness the elements of ’80s soft rock in the high shine animal prints and soft draping that recalled Dynasty and Poison in all the best ways.
