It is the season for deep crimson, but there’s more than one way to do a dark lip

ELLE (Malaysia) - - RADAR TREND -

Backstage at Giambattista Valli this season was a construction site, as makeup artist Val Garland and her M.A.C team built a bold burgundy lip on models, after prepping them with mirror-shine radiant skin and glossy brows. They started by colouring in the mouth with a burgundy lip pencil, keeping edges feathery and blurred, and then pressed in a custom mix of M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Carnivorous, Dance With Me and High Drama. The final touch was a lacquer of clear Lipglass for a fashion take on something faintly vampiric, or, as Val described it: “natural, hot, sexy and sweaty”.

As the seasons deepen typically so does the makeup, but some of the backstage moves felt especially fresh this Autumn/Winter. Take Jour/Né, where lips were velveteen, and no specialist products required. A blend of creamy reds was simply dusted with powder blushes in a dusky orange and amber brown. Yes, you can try this at home. It doesn’t all have to be goth city, either. Erin Fetherston’s romantic girl gang had nude lip liner applied all over their lips, carefully avoiding the edges, and then a wine lipstick lightly tapped into the middle of the lips. The result: a wintry pout we can easily fake for a mood shift in any heatwave.
