F for Fendi, F for Forever

Your day bag options just got a whole lot more interesting

Fendi’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection was all about going back to basics. Not in the banal, pared-back sense – this is Fendi, after all – but by turning the spotlight towards the house’s trademark craftsmanship and storied heritage. To that end, Karl Lagerfeld gave us skilfully cut boxy tailoring in rich heritage fabrics (herringbone, tweed, Prince of Wales checks), beautiful graphic print silks inspired by Viennese woodblock printing and 18th-century Italian papiers dominotés and sumptuous intarsia fur looks in warm autumnal hues, while creative director of accessories and menswear at Fendi, Silvia Venturini Fendi, worked her genius on accessories. The result: those signature striking patent red thigh-high boots that’ll be walking their way into the wardrobes of women the world over, metallic F-logo hoop earrings and ladylike yet modern bags that perfectly complemented the A-line skirt and trouser suits, double-breasted wool coats, cropped crochet sweaters and exquisite diaphanous gowns on the catwalk.

Of the bags, two new silhouettes shown for the first time during Milan A/W ’17 Fashion Week immediately went to the top of our new season shopping list for their knack in combining freshness with trans-seasonal longevity. The first, the Runaway bag, is a double-handled, goes-with-everything box tote that modern working women will love. It has a clean, structured shape, sleek geometric lines and sharp outlined edges, and comes in a range of nappa leather hues and exotic skins, including crocodile leather and handpainted python. But it’s also completely functional thanks to its lightweight yet roomy silhouette, made possible by internal microfibre lining. This means that you’ll be able to tote along all your working essentials without having to worry about the bag weighing you down throughout the day, while the front and internal pockets can stow smaller items like your keys, iPhone and credit cards.

What we love most about the Runaway bag though, is its dual handles. When you want to channel chic, grownup sophisticate, opt for the shorter top handle strap, which is punctuated by two shiny ‘F is Fendi’ logos finished in palladium or gold, then simply switch to the longer adjustable shoulder strap for a more casual weekend feel. Both Runway straps come with detachable spring clips so you can mix and match with various other Fendi straps.

Sitting right at the top of our wishlist along with the Runaway is the Triplette bag. Two are usually better than one, but in Fendi’s case, three is best: a set of three graduating sized pouches held together by a round snap hook in form of a large ‘F is Fendi’ handle in gold or palladium, to be exact. Crafted from leather in shades of red and white and multicoloured python skin, this clutch is guaranteed to make any outfit pop. Pare down your essentials and use it for day by pairing with denim jeans, a band tee and ankle boots or stow it in your Runaway tote for a speedy office-to-evening transition. If such timeless versatility isn’t reason to keep these bags around forever, we don’t know what is.
