The Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival by Diversecity—a non-profit that develops and invests in cultural and artistic ventures—is an arts festival in Kuala Lumpur that showcases a beautiful array of performances by both local and international acts. For its fourth year this 2018, the month-long festival will feature 15 shows where you’ll hear the rhythms of musical instruments like the seruling, rebana and sape; as well as get to witness a feast of song and dance from timeless Indian epic, The Ramayana.

But here’s a story that’ll warm your heart: Together with Studio DL, a photography studio, Diversecity is making a difference in the lesser privileged communities. One project was a photography workshop organised for a group of children from Seri Tioman 1, a cluster of low-cost housing apartments on the borders of Kuala Lumpur. The purpose of the workshop wasn’t to teach them to become professionals, but rather, the way photography changes the way we see things—to notice the little bits of beauty in everything. Selected images taken by the participants will be on display at the tunnel walkway at Masjid Jamek LRT Station, and at the Perumahan Awam Seri Tioman 1, Taman Melati. Now, how else can we inspire the community through the arts? Diversecity 2018, 1-30 September 2018; diver
