WHO: Thomas George Bata, Chairman, who’s the third generation Bata family member to lead the company
“We have a design centre in Italy now, where the best design comes from.” Yes, the Bata Innovation Style Centre, which is located in Venice, and the company’s collaborations with major design studios like Alberto del Biondi, Tomasso Gallina and FABLAB, are now driving much of the more creative pieces being released this year. For example, the FABLAB collab produced the athleisure-inspired Athletico collection (shown on left page).
“Technology! With it we can combine comfort and style these days.” Yup, that we have seen with many shoe brands and Bata is making major tracks in this direction. When it launched its Insolia collection, which featured patent-effect leather pumps, it promised a pain-free three hours, minimum.
“We’re investing in young people.” The chairman has a special interest in Bata’s entrepreneurship programmes that encourage, mentor and invest in young talent among designers and start-ups. It holds design competitions and even funding contests in an effort to get a head start in future looks.
“The cool looks are coming to KL. Look out for it.” Finally, the words we’ve been waiting for. From now onwards, we can start to see more fashion-forward pieces from Bata. The collection will be small, for now, and will feature both dress shoes and casual designs, and be focused on stores in KL, Penang and J.B. (about 40 stores are involved), and Bata says the prices will be cheaper than Aldo but higher than Charles & Keith. We. Can’t. Wait.
