BEAUTY INSIDER: GOING GLOBAL
FROM THE BRAND THAT HASN’T STOPPED MAKING WAVES SINCE ITS LAUNCH A MERE YEAR AGO, SARAH HANI JAMIL CATCHES UP WITH ITS GLOBAL MAKEUP ARTIST, HECTOR ESPINAL, WHO SCHOOLS US ON TRENDS, TRAVEL PICKS AND WORK INSPO.
Fenty Beauty’s Global Makeup Artist, Hector Espinal, shares the trends he loves and the one he reckons should go away.
If you check out Fenty Beauty on Instagram, you’ll see that it has a 4.3-million following and counting, which is way more than what some of the classic makeup brands you’ve grown up with have. And it’s with good reason; the brand champions diversity and inclusion from the get-go, featuring women in hijab and a great mix of different skin tones, and it’s a refreshing illustration of what beauty is today. Dominican Republic-born Hector is a great example of that diversity. Being an urban Latino and as one of the only two Global Makeup Artists of the Americanmade makeup brand by the one and only Rihanna, he shows that there are no boundaries as to what you can achieve.
On comeback trends
“I feel that what I’d like to see is already coming back, which is the ‘90s flavour like brown lipsticks, shimmery eyeshadows and body glitter. However, I’m usually inspired by the ‘50s and the ‘70s. The ‘50s is classic with clean, polished skin and the ‘70s has lots of colours and metallics.”
On the one trend that should go away
“I don’t like boxy brows like the ones you see on Instagram. They aren’t natural nor flattering at all. Madonna has dark brows but they were never boxy. It’s weird!”
On his travel essentials
“I can’t leave my house without the Match Stix. Those are super universal and you can use them on the lips, eyes, cheeks or wherever you like. I also can’t live without the blotting powder and Gloss Bomb. It’s so crazy because I never liked powder before but I’m in love with this one because it looks just like my skin when I pat it on! And I use Gloss Bomb everywhere – cheeks, lips or eyes – whenever I want that extra glow.”
On what keeps him inspired
“There’s nothing better than having an amazing boss and mine just happens to be Rihanna. And I think that the people that I touched and believe in what I do inspire me to become better.”
On the best thing about his job
“Meeting different people, of course! It’s very refreshing. From a national to global artist, I now get to see globally what every woman wants and needs. It’s amazing!”
