READ, WATCH AND LISTEN
Five years ago I chanced upon
Crazy Rich Asians at a bookstore. Intrigued by the cover, I read the synopsis and laughed at its hilarity before putting it back on the bookshelf. That Christmas, I received it as a gift, and thus began my fixation with Kevin Kwan’s characters in the trilogy up until the final book came out last year, just months after the shoot for the first movie wrapped up in Singapore and Malaysia.
As it turned out, I wasn’t the only one who thoroughly enjoyed the series, as outlandish as it may be. The storyline resonated with millions of Asians around the world including us at Team FEMALE, and I particularly liked how Kevin threw in familiar phrases in various dialects that I grew up with here and there, with the accompanying footnotes on some pages for the benefit of those who didn’t understand them.
As luck would have it, our Features & Lifestyle Writer, Tammy got an exclusive invitation to go behind the scenes during the film shoot in Singapore last year, and in early August, she flew to Los Angeles, USA, for the press screening as well as to catch up with the main cast in a fun session that was caught on camera which, if you haven’t already watched, you can view on our YouTube and enjoy repeatedly.
For the most part, our anticipation of the Crazy Rich Asians movie was more than just getting to see one of our favourite books brought to life on the big screen; we were excited about Asian representation in Hollywood and the media – like, finally. And to have our very own Malaysian talents in the main cast – including the lead actor who was one of FEMALE’s 50 Gorgeous People back in the day – now that’s just tripling the icing on the cake!
In this issue, we’re celebrating the movers and shakers in the local and international music and movie industry. Flip the pages and you’ll see how much we loved putting them all together for you! We’ve even got the exclusive scoop on Italian digital influencer and #girlboss, Chiara Ferragni’s fairytale wedding gowns and shoes designed by Dior’s Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and the whole shebang in Fit For A Queen (pg. 56).
Now all you need to do is turn on your Spotify and put FEMALE’s playlist (pg. 144) on repeat, then grab your favourite drink and popcorn to accompany your reading pleasure.
It’s really rare in TV not to think, ‘Well, I’ve seen a version of this before.’
