The people’s Atari

Ataribox is going the crowdfunding route.

GAX (Malaysia) - - NEWSW IRE -

Atari has revealed the design of its rst console in over two decades. Dubbed the Ataribox, it is inspired by the classic Atari consoles, with familiar design cues like the wood housing, ribbed lines and raised back. It was also revealed that the console will be available in either a wood or red/ black edition.

Another interesting thing about the Ataribox is that it would be crowdfunded. “To limit risk taking, this product will initially be launched within the framework of a crowdfunding campaign,” according to an investors’ note. This is an interesting move to make for the company, considering that it’s a point that was omitted from official announcements, and only mentioned in a French note to investors. There is a chance that the company is hoping that it can use the power of nostalgia to entice people into funding the project. At the same time, it can be dif cult to get people interested in something that only has good looks but no other details, such as specifications, to go with.

With Atari itself not confident of its new console, it would be interesting to see if there are enough fans that have the confidence the company lacks in the Ataribox. For others, it would sound like Atari isn’t very convinced in its bid to retake the living room, wresting it away from the reign of Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.
