Former Laureus President Nelson Mandela inaugurated the Laureus World Sports Awards, as he lays the foundation for the global Laureus movement. Appearing at the festive gala this year were Boris Becker, Serhij Bubkka, Michael Johnson, Mika Häkkinen and Katarina Witt. The shoes are then being signed and auctioned off, with all proceeds donated to the worldwide efforts of the charity organisation.
The charitable organisation provides financial support to over 150 sports projects in 35 countries, such as the Peace Players International project that actively encourage Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cyrpriot boys and girls to play
