Tournaments galore!

Golf Asia (Malaysia) - - FOREWORD - BEN POON

The past couple of months have been a busy period for amateur golfers around the globe. If you flip through the next couple of pages you will realise there are many companies that hold their own tournaments or events for their partners and clients. Some events had humble beginnings, in terms of participation as well as scale, but many have now grown into massive tournaments that encompass and involve personnel, partners and customers across many different markets. The scale of which almost mirrors that of the major tours, with fierce competition and qualifying rounds to enter the finals.

From world-class airlines to automobile marques to exquisite timepiece makes, they have found the common denominator or that bond, which is golf, using it to reach out as well as cement the relationships with all stakeholders. Many charities around the world have benefitted from such golf events as well, where the golfing community gives back to the needy or to a worthwhile cause.

Although golf still remains relatively beyond the reach of the masses, especially in Asia, this divide is being overcome with more access to courses, more affordable green fees as well as equipment. And with the planned simplification and better presentation of the Rules Of Golf, I hope more people will take up the sport because where else can one socialise and get to know friends or associates better and perhaps get the opportunity to contribute to charities, than over a round of golf!
