Indulging in the hair obsessions that rule runway and real life

The total look always begins from the top. When runway trends are now as much about Guido Palau’s wet hair look at Prada as they are about Miuccia Prada’s Hitchcock-esque skirt suits (don’t we all remember the hot pink dip dye of last Autumn that even got me The Ombre?) you know that the dress is really only half of the story. Designers know the impact of hair and make-up in projecting the concept of the collection; the right hairstyle has the ability to elevate our individuality, empowering us with that certain crowning glory”.

We don’t realise how much we invest in and obsess about our hair, until we actually talk about it. In doing so, I’m thinking of my own arsenal of specialised shampoo, volumiser, regular cut and colour sessions, the right hairbrush, and professional hair dryer … all to keep my tresses healthy and natural-looking, nothing fancy. This month I join an exclusive judging panel of serious hair insiders to present this year’s BAZAAR Hair Awards for winning products, stylists, and salons. This comes right at the start of the season as we’re considering the ideal hairstyle – sexy ’50s crops to match Louis Vuitton’s pyjama de luxe looks, Fendi’s punked-up braids or, if you dare, the coloured coils of Givenchy.

Autumn/ Winter opens in this issue, chapter by chapter, into eloquent stories of neo-punk, autumn pastels, mid-century styles, and crazy furs – the new luxury statement. Oversized, multi-coloured, and patchworked, these new remakes are young in spirit and yet supersophisticated. Fendi takes its 88-year fur heritage into the future, in an electric fairy tale which we exclusively shot in the streets of Tokyo in ‘Sexy Beast’ (page 124) wiwith homeboy Ultraman adding his touch of irreverence. The nnew watches of 2013 are also launched herhere, trending coloured faces from classic nanavy to grey, amid the comeback of rose gogold. These timepieces add a perfect crocrowning touch.
