The starting point was the severity of Flemish paintings and the purity of their colours. Inspired by how the faces were framed in these portraits, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri put a “Girl with a Pearl Earring” braid on each model and furnished almost every single look with a white collar. Some were plain cotton while others were laser-cut leather or came with a strand of pearls. The collars lent modernity and wearability to the exquisite gowns and dresses they were attached to, and how exquisite they were. Demure and romantic with high necklines, scalloped edges, and elaborate floral embroidery, these were perfect occasion pieces. Even the less elaborate but still perfectly constructed daywear would lend a sense of occasion to the day-to-day.
