PALAZZO BELMONTE AND VILLA SIRENA

Harper’s Bazaar (Malaysia) - - Life -

The Belmonte estate once covered swaths of southern Italy and Spain. Now all that is left is a palace by the Tyrrhenian Sea at the head of the Cilento coast. Near the fishing village of Santa Maria di Castellabate, a five-acre garden hides behind high stone walls clad in ivy and jasmine. Swallows dive-bomb the bougainvillea-cloaked ramparts and songbirds flit through terraces shaded by umbrella-pine and palms. Licosa, the prince’s private nature reserve forested in pines, is a short drive away; here, the Belmonte summer home, Villa Sirena ( Tel: +39 0974 960211), can be rented. A seawater pool sits in the lee of a ruined Roman tower amid azaleas, oleander, and honeysuckle. Just off the rocky coastline lurk the foundations of an ancient sunken city, which divers can explore. www.palazzobelmonte.com
