EYE SPY

Harper’s Bazaar (Malaysia) - - The Zone -

BAZAAR talks to Ti Kwa, co-founder of eyewear brand Rigards, whose naturalhorn sunglasses have been catching the attention of discerning fashion insiders all

around the globe from Paris to Tokyo. What got you started in this eyewear business? In a nutshell, my partner [ JeanMarc Virard] and I got bored of mass-produced frames. We wanted to create something original and different. Our products are for men and women who treasure objects that will get better with age and wear. What’s the look of the brand and what do you think sets it apart? I would say that we are nonconformist. We use natural horn for all our glasses and we handcraft every single frame the old-school way. Because it’s natural, the horn varies in grain and colour so each piece is unique in depth and richness. And to top it off, horn develops a beautiful patina over time. Where were these new sunglasses made? We source our horn from all over the world, including Africa and Mongolia, and the glasses are made in our atelier in Hong Kong. Do you work with other fashion brands? We did a collaboration with Thamanyah by Ahmed Abdelrahman last season. We will be expanding that to a women’s collection. Right now, we’re working on some really exciting crossovers but they’re still in the early stages. I would love to collaborate with Yohji Yamamoto. Will you be expanding into other categories? At the moment, our focus is solely on our eyewear and making improvements to our existing product offerings. What’s the next big thing in eyewear? These days, it seems people are showing a lot of love for round shapes and well-endowed frames in unusual materials, which is great for us! Rigards eyewear is available at Reliance Optical, 27, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar. Tel: 03-2284 9906. FRESHMAN 101 Pro- environment, Lierac’s anti-irritation after-shave moisturiser is made of the most potent plant extracts. This soothing balm envelops the skin post-shave with fresh peppermint extracts that are rich in polyphenols that produce “happy molecules” to reduce redness as well as that irritating sting – and it’s all natural.
