BY M.I.A. The provocative rapper’s latest musical offering has her looking to her inner goddess – Matangi, that is, the Hindu goddess of music (and the ‘M’ in her moniker, short for Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam). Matangi expands on the Eastern flavour introduced on infectious singles such as “Bad Girls” and “Bring the Noize” that made the cut on this long-awaited fourth album. M.I. A. confessed to being nervous about this as it “doesn’t have a tranquil flute massage sound.” But it’s hard not to love her chaotic, digital blend of hip-hop, bhangra, punk, pop, and rap.
