The big skirt is big news for Spring 2014. Shin-grazing, sweeping, majestic – frankly, this skirt is not for everyone. The pleated version, on the other hand, can do all of the above, as well as look crisply modern and be much easier to wear. Look for statement fabrics, either gauzy muslin and chiffon, in light colours or shades of white, like Calvin Klein’s, or Jonathan Saunders’s tiered layers, which will float gracefully as you move; or seek out neoprenes and duchesse satins, which give both volume and softness. Make sure the pleats fall from the hips rather than your waist for the most tummy-flattening, hip-flattering effect. Wear with: a tunic top or a tailored cotton men’s shirt. There’s nothing waif-like or wistful about this one.
