Patrick Pace, international business director of Rancé for 13 years on the haute perfume brand that’s been making couture scents since the 18th Century.

“In 17th-Century Grasse, founder François Rancé started out as a skilled craftsman of perfumed gloves, which were all the rage in China and Russia. After the French Revolution, Monsieur Rancé moved into creating fragrances for the aristocrats, one of whom was Napoleon Bonaparte.

“Today Rancé is still a family-run company. We have the 12th generation taking over very soon. We still sell creations from 200 years ago – certain ingredients like musk could have been replaced synthetically since then, of course. But we also have a modern collection released two years ago, by Madame Rancé.

“One of them is a masterpiece called Jasmin du Malabar, which is known as the best place to grow jasmine in the southeast of India. This is probably one of our most successful fragrances – known to be unique because it does not have only one kind of jasmine, but different kinds of jasmines to bring out the most vivacious side of the scent.” Available exclusively at Parkson Pavilion KL. www.rance1795.com
