ONE IN A MILLION Paco Rabanne’s obsession with metal unearths a sensual new fragrance that leaves a lasting impression. By SC Chua.
Paco Rabanne once said: “Creativity is not about seduction. It’s about shocking. I try to create powerful moments because emotions speak only the truth.” This is how “the metallurgist” – as nicknamed by Coco Chanel – stirred up the fashion scene with his cutting-edge take on style and design. From shiny chain-link dresses (remember Jane Birkin’s “Rabannette” mesh metal number?) to plastic accessories made of clear acetate, the Spanish designer – who is also a trained architect – brings cloth, metal, leather, and plastic together to create jaw-dropping avant-garde fashion. This obsession with metal extends to Rabanne’s fragrances, starting with Calandre, his first scent released in 1969. For this, he mixed metal and glass as a reflection of his favourite materials. The name is French for ‘radiator grille’ while its masculine flacon is said to draw inspiration from the United Nations building. As for the scent, it also gives off the impression of metal: Calandre is a harmonious bouquet of fresh green florals bursting with rosy, woody, and peppery notes.
This scent would become the platform for his “Rabannian” vision of architecture, design, and fragrances. What followed was a suite of iconic scents, each borne of the notion of metal as a showpiece in Rabanne’s eyes. A recent creation, One Million, is the result of a collaboration with French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. Within a gleaming gold ingot is a striking men’s fragrance that symbolises opulence, flamboyance, and success.
The spicy leather blend echoes the famous Paco Rabanne dress worn by French singer Françoise Hardy 40 years ago, a diamond-encrusted minidress in nine kilogrammes of thin gold plates. Then came Lady Million for women: “Gold is the symbol of power and royalty, and offers something profoundly virile. But it is also something materially reassuring, something stable that, at the same time, holds something magic,” said Rabanne.
ON THE RISE
Today, the new Lady Million embodies power and more. In campaign model Hana Jirickova’s words: “The world is her oyster. Strong yet feminine, she knows what she wants and how to get it.” Born in the Czech Republic, Jirickova made her mark fuelled by her ambition and hard work. The face of Lady Million goes by her motto that “seduction is my art, freedom is my job,” and the ever avant-garde Rabanne saw this in the 24-year-old from the start.
The eau de toilette, in contrast to the original, is an emblem of feminism and femininity. This sparkling cocktail is a rich bouquet mingling with fruity accents of mango, neroli, and grapefruit, underscored by sexy notes of musk and amber. “Lady Million loves life, is full of attitude, and pushes things to the limit,” smiles Jirickova. “She is my kind of woman.”
