B E YOND THE L AUNDE R E T T E
Precisely half an hour later, a spillage of familiar faces started to crowd the entrance. I later found out that the drag queen was Milk of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Anyway, I was admitted without another hiccup, and was led straight through a green-tiled residential launderette. So far, so nondescript. I kept moving down towards a small door, where a burly security man stood.
“Go on in,” he said. Passing through the threshold, I was instantly transported into another world, a world of Great Gatsby decadence, red carpeted floors, and mahogany closets filled with gold trinkets, a world surmounted by a trembling crystal chandelier and fancy boas draped around women with darkrimmed eyes and sooty lips.
I passed a dimly lit stairway reminiscent of a theatre’s box seat entryway, and found myself standing in a dark theatre that was slowly filling up with Marc Jacobs’ guests. Handsome young waiters milled about with bite-sizes to munch on (I am vegan, but I heard the caviar was decadent). A vintage organ glinted down near the stage. An aquarium that could rival the one in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet glowed mysteriously in phosphorescent green on another side. Jazz played on and on and on.
I heard Jacobs was already in the house, seated very near to the stage at a velour and tassel-adorned table, with his entourage – Sofia Coppola, Rachel Weinstein, Kim Gordon, his dog Neville, and Adriana Lima, the face of his new perfume, Decadence.
THE WOMAN O F THE FUTUR E
But before I could arch my head to catch a glimpse of the man of the night, a Coty PR told me no social media was allowed, and then drew my attention to a woman standing with her face hovering above a crystal tal ball of light.
“Please come and meet the fragrance’s nose,” she was telling me how Annienie Buzantian, the latest master perfumer to collaborate with Jacobs, had on the previous night, received a Perfumer of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award ard from The Fragrance Foundation. I congratulated her and fastened on to ask her about the scent, which up to this point, I still had not had the chancence to try.
