If our skin is the battlefield for oxidative stresses day in, day out, then this weapon of choice will surely help you win the fight. By Li Ying Lim.

The answer is yes. Our skin works 24/7, and differently during day and night. Here is the ideal situation: When we wake, our skin follows suit and puts on its best face – literally – to fight the environmental triggers and internal stresses that will set out to age us. When the sun goes down, the skin will retreat and prepare to heal in your resting state. “Free radicals that come from pollution, UVA/UVB radiation, and poor air quality assault our skin the most during the day and have the potential to damage our lipids, proteins, and DNA,” states Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s consulting dermatologist. But the ideal situation tends to deteriorate, mainly due to the diminishing defences of the skin caused by age and exhaustion. “Barrier function diminishes and the antioxidant content in the skin is reduced, making the skin more susceptible to free radical damage and accelerated ageing,” Dr. Geyer continues. “Cortisol, a molecule associated with energy metabolism that peaks during morning hours, is also released in response to stress. Chronic and excessive cortisol can make the skin more vulnerable to dehydration, free radical-induced damage, infection, and inflammation.” That is why protection is imperative. While Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate has been recommended for use in the day as well as night, the potency of this potion is really maximised during night-time, when the body’s biggest organ is recuperating. This calls for a daytime alternative – Kiehl’s new Daily Reviving Concentrate, a 100 percent natural blend of botanical and natural oils that helps support the defence mechanism of the skin during the day. What makes it so effective and unique, Dr. Geoffrey Genesky, head of Kiehl’s Skincare Laboratory, says, is that “Kiehl’s sunflower seed oil undergoes an extra distillation step that further concentrates an active fraction of the oil, but it is also gentle enough to maintain the oil’s integrity. The result is a variety of benefits for healthy-looking skin, including the support of barrier strength to help ensure water retention. Tamanu oil has been studied for its soothing effects, making it a great choice for a daytime product due to skin stressors present throughout the day. And we chose our specific ginger root essential oil since in-vitro studies have demonstrated its antioxidant capability.” Because of its all-natural formula, sensitive and acne-prone skin types will be able to use this oil without reservations. “These specific botanical and essential oils not only create a protective layer that diminishes the penetration of environmental aggressors, but they also serve as a reservoir of benefits that provide daytime hydration,” seconds Dr. Geyer.
