Covered in mirrored panelling and white spaces, Phillip K Smith III’s ‘Lucid Stead’ installation in the Californian High Desert became the launch pad for Nicholas Kirkwood’s Spring/ Summer ’16 collection. “I was studying negative spaces and their positive effects,” said the British shoemaker, whose recent collection studied these illusions. “I was particularly drawn to how the reflective, interrupted surface of the ‘shed’ created illusions of camouflage and invisibility, drawing your focus to the surrounding shapes and abstract presence of the wood cabin.” Case in point: Kirkwood’s cut-out heels and laceup gladiators in Technicolor brights that took colouring beyond the lines, and to a whole new level.
