Harper’s Bazaar (Malaysia) - - Beauty Bazaar -

Describe a typical training day. I go for a run in the morning, followed by some activation exercises on my stomach and back. I usually practise for three hours a day but if I’m preparing for a match, then the training is more structured and intense. After tennis training, I’ll go for a fitness session with a mixture of running and weights. It is not all hard work—I get a massage almost everyday.

How do you maintain your stamina?

I eat healthy and take in sufficient water to ensure I have the energy to keep up with my intense training. My fitness sessions help in building my stamina.

What keeps you going in all your accomplishments?

It’s the titles and the competitions—the big ones like the French and US Opens. I still feel I have it in me to win those tournaments and that’s what I strive for.

Tell us about your healthy diet.

I absolutely love sushi and sashimi—I eat so much fish. It’s important when I’m training not to eat anything too heavy and Japanese food is perfect as it’s so light.

Shiseido named you its global beauty ambassador for WetForce Sun Protection. What does this collaboration mean to you?

It’s very special. I’ve known the brand for so long and have so much respect for it because it represents sophistication and innovation. I saw this as a really exciting opportunity, especially to bring to light to those unaware of this brand’s dedication to sun protection. I hope to spread the message that beauty and femininity can have a place in sport.

What kind of sun protection problems have you had in the past?

I am exposed to the sun everyday and have tried so many brands over the years, but they all feel very heavy or they end up running into my eyes or affecting my grip on my racket.

Do you wear any make-up when playing tennis?

Not really. However, I do have three items I must use when preparing for a match. Hairspray is a must when I compete, especially in windy conditions; lip balm, because I often play in hot, desert-like temperatures and I hate it when my lips are dry; and finally, sun protection to be well-protected everytime I’m on court.

What are your style must-haves?

I love dresses. I’ve worn a lot of Matthew Williamson dresses recently. As for casual outings, I wear a mixture of brands but my favourite would be Rag & Bone. I’m also a big fan of accessories because they can really make a look feel complete.

Who has truly inspired you in the world of tennis?

I watched Monica Seles on TV when I was little and was instantly drawn to this sport. I really admired her and I’ve been lucky to have met her a few times.
