She was known as the other Bell twin, until Paul Hanlon took a razor to her hair. Ruth Bell’s cascading locks—and the umbilical cord tying her to her identical sibling’s career—were cut half an hour into Alexander McQueen’s Autumn/Winter ’15 campaign shoot. The result saw her explode onto the runway and into starring campaign roles for Saint Laurent and Burberry. While the initial motivation for Ruth to see the buzz cut through was David Sims (who was shooting the McQueen campaign), she’s since maintained it, using her dad’s hair clippers every two to three weeks on a number-three setting. Model Kris Gottschalk also made a name for herself with a spiky style. The German beauty debuted the look—which she adopted after a motorbike accident—in her first runway show, for Public School menswear. Givenchy artistic director Riccardo Tisci took notice, asking for the story behind her cut. She explained it was symbolic of a new beginning. Tisci saw potential and asked if she’d go shorter and change the hue, and after a two-hour stint at Pickthorn, the custom hair-painting atelier in Brooklyn, a buzzed and bleached Gottschalk emerged with a promising new career trajectory alongside her.
