Fitness retreats used to have a one-size-fits-all approach—everyone rises at dawn, does tai chi, and “enjoys” a bowl of muesli before yoga. But now, thanks to an emerging era of scientific study called nutrigenomics, which looks at how our DNA affects our nutrition, health retreats are tailoring programmes to suit each guest’s genetic make-up. At the BodyHoliday resort in St. Lucia, the BodyScience Programmes do just this—and gets results. In the weeks before arriving, guests complete a series of athome medical tests that include DNA analysis (don’t worry, it only involves a saliva test). Your fitness schedule, sports plan, and holistic therapies are then tweaked, taking into account factors such as blood type and whether you’re genetically prone to injury. A similar package is available at the Epic Sana hotels in Portugal and 38 Degrees North in Ibiza (in case your DNA shows you were born to party!). A study by the European Society of Human Genetics found that people who followed a diet based on their genetics lost 33 percent more weight than a control group who just ate cleanly. www.thebodyholiday.com; www.algarve.epic.sanahotels.com; www.thirtyeightdegreesnorth.com
