WHAT ARE TOP, MIDDLE AND BASE NOTES?

As fragrances evaporate over time, the notes that your nose picks up are separated into three classes – top, middle and base notes – and form a fragrance pyramid. Top notes - usually more fruity, citrusy or ozonic – are the ones you can detect immediately. Middle notes, also known as heart notes, are scents that your nose is able to discern after the fragrance has settled down and reacted with your skin. These notes are often floral, spicy or herbaceous. Lastly, base notes are what’s left of the fragrance and they’re mainly woods, musks or balsams.

PICK YOUR FRAGRANCE IN A FLASH

Start by spritzing the fragrance on a tester card to get an idea of the scent. If it’s something you like, spray some on your wrist and wait at least one to two hours before purchasing it. You’ll be able to experience how the notes react with your skin, as well as how the fragrance evaporates over time – which you won’t know from sniffing it on a card. Don’t immediately rub your wrists together. Pat at the fragrance until it dries, so it’s concentrated in one area.

EDP, EDT OR EDC?

The higher the concentration of perfume oil, the longer a fragrance will last, and the higher its price. • Eau de cologne 5 per cent oil and fades within an hour.

• Eau de toilette 5 to 15 per cent oil and lasts close to two hours.

• Eau de parfum 10 to 20 per cent oil and lasts up to four hours.

WHERE IS THE BEST SPOT TO WEAR IT?

The key is to always spritz the fragrance on your pulse points, which are on the wrists, neck and décolleté. This gets the scent to last longer than if you were to spray it in the air and walk through the mist. An alternative is to spray some on your hair, so the scent wafts when your hair moves. However, avoid doing this too often as the alchohol and chemicals in the fragrance will dry out your tresses.
