JVC esnsy HA-SR85S-T

Elegance Meets Function

HWM (Malaysia) - - LAB TEST - TEXT // SHARMINE ISHAK

Over the years, technology and fashion have become one and the same, urging manufacturers to innovate and create products that look good and perform just as well. For JVC, the esnsy line is the result of that innovation; headphones that combine the best of design and function. We take a closer look at the full-sized esnsy HA-SR86S-T, which is also the grandest in the array.

Sporting a retro-modern design, the esnsy HA-SR85S-T is a pair of squarish headphones that feel sturdy and robust, but not heavy or bulky. Although it is built mainly of plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap and looks quite luxurious with its translucent glossy finish. Even the chrome and faux leather-wrapped headband gives it a premium quality; turning heads wherever you go. However, we would have appreciated a better way to store this accessory for portability, as the ear cups can only be swiveled and made flat, which does little to reduce its size.

For comfort, the HA-SR86ST’s adjustable headband can be lengthened accordingly for a better fit. The leatherette ear pads are also snug and comfortable to wear, as they fully cover the ears for complete isolation from external noise and do not feel uncomfortable despite long hours of wear. This is because the ear pads offer great ventilation and do not trap heat around the ears, so you need not worry about sweating from having the headphones clamped to your head. The ear pads are also effective at keeping the sound in with almost no noise leakage.

Features-wise, the HASR86S-T comes with a 3.5mm gold-plated stereo plug, which delivers enhanced audio with little or no loss in quality. There's a built-in integrated control and microphone, which can be enabled by pressing a button on the right side of the headphones. This allows users to use the device as a headset for music and taking calls, whenever it is connected to their smartphone, which should offer users some value and added convenience. What we also like is that these headphones uses flat cables, which help keep it tanglefree.

When it comes to sound, however, these headphones pack quite a punch, thanks to their two superior neodymium 40mm driver units that offer superb volume, strong bass and a natural midrange. Vocals stand out with clarity and form, while deeper, lower frequencies are intense but not overpowering. Despite its strength with bass-heavy music, however, we noted that sound staging isn’t as pronounced on classical and acoustic pieces, as some of the little details in the treble such as strings and percussion were lost in the background. Nonetheless, we applaud the hardware's capability of reproducing a variety of instruments across different sound ranges with good balance.

Available in either brown or black, the elegant JVC esnsy HASR85S-T offers pretty great quality and is perfect for those who want a pair of headphones that look and sound good. With its modern take on retro-styling, good performance and neat features, you’ll want to carry these babies with you wherever you go.
