Last month we reviewed Brother’s DS-600 portable scanner, a compact device that is ideal for scanning documents quickly while you’re out of the office. Today’s employers are demanding their workers be more productive whilst out of the office and it is becoming essential that they are equipped with the necessary tools to take on these challenges. This month we review Brother’s DS-700D, a mobile 2-sided document scanner.

Setting up the DS-700D is simple; after installing the proper drivers and programs on your computer, simply hook up the scanner to it and you’re good to go. Aesthetically, the DS-700D is compact but ergonomically designed and measures just 319 x 76 x 54mm while weighing only 603g. Though it may be a little more robust than the DS-600, the DS-700D is still a compact unit. Around the device you will find a lone USB port, a single button and paper feeder.

Among the programs that can be installed on your notebook or computer to scan documents include Brother’s DSmobile SCAN II program, which is compatible with Windows systems only and provides users with a comprehensive number of options, allowing them to scan in JPEG, TIFF or PDF when scanning documents. Besides that, users can also opt to install the Presto Page Manager 9 SE that is compatible with both, Windows and Mac devices and allows you to scan and organize digitized files with the ability to view, edit, send and save them as searchable PDF, HTML, RTF and TXT files.

To gauge the performance of the DS-700D, we conducted a number of tests. To begin, we started scanning a single page in black and white. This took the machine about 8.8 seconds to complete. Inspecting the quality of the scan more closely, we found the page had been accurately scanned and was easily readable. Seeing that the machine also boasted a duplex mode, we ran it again and found the DS-700D took an understandably longer time of 18.6 seconds to complete scanning both pages.

Following that, we also did a similar test in color. A single color page took the scanner 26 seconds to complete, while a duplex color scan was finished in 47 seconds. Understandably, the scanner needs more time to capture color detail on documents and though the quality of scans may vary depending on the original document, scanned colors though slightly darker are accurate and text is legible.

With that said, the Brother DS-700D mobile 2-sided document scanner is an easy device to use, while being reasonably portable. Its compact form factor allows users to easily fit it into any bag and will complement well with notebooks as it only requires a single USB port to power up. We also appreciate the DS-700D’s simplicity thanks to its bundled programs that allow it to function with either Windows or Mac machines. So, if you are looking to digitize some critical documents on the go, the DS700D has certainly got you covered.
