We still remember the days of old when 1GB was a whole lot of storage. Today, a hard drive can store a lot more than that. Toshiba’s line of Canvio portable hard drives provides customers with ample storage capacity and efficient read/write speeds. This month, we got to try out its latest product, the Canvio Connect, a portable hard drive that allows you to backup and share digital content from any location.

Aesthetically speaking, the Canvio Connect has a fresh, trendier design than most portable hard drives. With up to five variants: Blue, Red, White, Black and Grey, users are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the color that suits them best. The entire exterior of the Canvio Connect is covered entirely by a glossy material, except for the rubber grip edges. Sturdy construction aside, the drive is also very small and light, making it easy to carry around.

There is a microUSB port on one end of the Canvio Connect, which is compatible with both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 standards. The drive comes pre-formatted in NTFS, allowing for easy file transfer on Windows PCs. Although the drive is also compatible with Mac PCs, users will need to download the ‘Tuxera NTFS for Mac’ software, which is already included in the Canvio Connect. After that has been configured, you can even back up file from your Mac using Time Machine.

Besides its aesthetics, the Canvio Connect also comes with a rather nifty feature, the ‘Connect’ part of the name derives from the fact that it comes with Pogo Plug PC, a software that turns the drive’s host PC into a personal cloud server as long as the machine is connected to the Internet. This allows users to access data stored within the Canvio Connect remotely via a mobile app, as long as the drive is connected to the PC.

Moving on to our performance test, we ran a number of transfer speed tests to gauge the performance of the Canvio Connect. These tests were done using a PC’s USB 3.0 port, with 1GB worth of data transferred in one minute and 18 seconds and 4GB dealt within five minutes and 18 seconds. These speed tests speak for themselves, showing that that Canvio Connect is more than capable of transferring files fairly fast, making it ideal for users who work with large files.

Being small, stylish and large in capacity, the Toshiba Canvio Connect is an ideal portable hard drive to store your files. Thanks to Pogoplug PC, users can essentially turn their PC into a pseudo NAS to store and access their files efficiently. In addition to its useful features, the Canvio Connect also provides users with above average performance when transferring their files. This hard drive is also ideal for those who are constantly on the move and are always in the need for more portable storage space.
