Samsung S9 85” UHD TV
Ultra HD Canvas
If wealth can be measured in televisions, then Samsung's latest flagship model, the S9 85” UHD TV looks to be the wealthiest of them all. This month, we had the chance to test out the S9 series, which boasts the capability to play the latest Ultra HD (UHD) digital format content.
When we first saw the S9, we were taken aback by its size and unique canvas-like design. The 85-inch UHD TV makes for an eyecatching showpiece in one's living room. Having said that, finding a place for the TV may prove to be a challenge, as users will need to take into account of the TV's large stand. Aesthetically, the S9 features a surprisingly minimalist design, being almost devoid of any port. This is because Samsung has relegated the majority of its ports to the 'One Connect' external device, which is connected to the TV via a single cable, preventing the problem of cable clutter. In addition, the S9 is said to be 'Future Proof', as users can easily swap the external device with Samsung's future Evolution Kits, allowing the TV to accommodate future video standards.
When testing the S9's performance, we had to do so based on Samsung's own videos, so we could not run all our usual tests. Based on what we saw, which ranged from wildlife to cityscapes, we found the images to be superbly clear and sharp to the point we were able to notice the fine furs on the animals. To test the color accuracy of the S9, we used our Gretag Macbeth color chart to measure the colors. We were quite pleased to see the colors to be accurately reproduced.
Back to the aesthetics, we noticed that the S9 has a built-in audio system that is fitted within the TV's sleek frame. Despite the space constraints, the S9's audio system sports four panels of 120W surround sound speakers. In terms of sound quality, we found the speakers to handle deep bass and higher treble sound impressively. Also built into the S9's sleek frame is a small camera that allows users to intuitively interact with Samsung's Smart TV interface through motion controls. If you prefer a more traditional means of control, the S9 also comes with a remote as well.
At this point of writing, UHD content is still a little difficult to come by, so it is fortunate that the S9 comes with an effective up-scaling technology that converts lower resolution content to UHD-level picture quality easily. It is by no mean perfect, but it enables users to enjoy their current media library on the S9 effectively.
As a whole, the Samsung S9 85” UHD TV is a unique looking TV that will draw the eyes of many people. It does however come with a hefty price tag. Despite that, it does not deny the fact that the S9 is one of the best UHD TVs in the market. To those who can afford it, we congratulate you.
Users can rely on the TV's motion controls to operate the S9.
