Samsung recently introduced the new GALAXY Tab 3 Kids edition. The tablet itself is actually based on the original GALAXY Tab 3, but with a new twist. What is different here is the software inside it. Now, you might be asking yourself why an existing product has been revamped for children. and how is it different from the other tablets in the market?

Inside the box, you will find a C Pen Stylus, a Grip Cover, a lanyard and the standard Samsung accessories. The C Pen stylus and Grip Cover are designed to be kids friendly. The use of bright colors and strong plastic that is safe for children certainly deserves praise. Plus, the tablet ran reasonably well for a dual-core powered device, with the occasional stutters when running certain apps.

That was basically the rundown of what’s inside the box, so let’s talk about the main draw of the tablet, which is the software. When booting up the device for the first time, you will be prompted to choose between Kids mode vibrant user interface that’s designed with kids in mind or standard mode, the former which is a customized, between kids mode, a customized, vibrant user interface that’s design for kids, or the standard mode.

Preloaded with fun and entertaining apps, such as Toca Hair Salon 2 and Kids Planet Discover, the younger ones will have plenty of easy-to-play apps to keep them occupied. Apart from the preloaded apps, parents can also introduce more apps through Google Play, whose access can be denied based on their preferences.

What makes this device interesting is that parental control is simplified and accessible to help parents monitor the children’s play time. After setting up the device and registering the pin code, it is now ready to access the parental control options.

Inside, you’ll find key important functions that Samsung has implemented: Application Manager and Time Manager, the latter which is a useful tool to set play time limits. Application Manager, on the other hand, allows one to restrict access to certain apps. With a friendly user interface, the parental controls are a step above most tablet offerings today. The control parameters also function very well, which gives this tablet an advantage.

However, if you think this tablet is only meant for kids, you are quite mistaken. Running under the hood is the familiar Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. This means that you can enjoy entertainment and productivity as and how they would be presented on the original GALAXY Tab 3 tablet. Switching between Kids mode and standard mode can be a bit of a hassle, but it nevertheless provides additional security options that are seldom seen in the tablet market.

The conclusion? This tablet performs exceptionally well. What make it distinct is the cleverly crafted software and two separate interfaces that cater to different audiences.

Simplified menus make it easy to set up parental controls.
