IBM Develops New Cloud Storage Solution
New Patent-Pending Solution Securely Migrates Data Across Multiple Clouds
InterCloud, IBM’s patent-pending software, is aimed at providing users with a simpler way to manage cloud storage. The new invention overcomes the concerns of data resiliency, security and service continuity. This allows users to seamlessly store and move data across multiple clouds.
“Our cloud-of-clouds invention can help clients avoid service outages and security incidents that impact the reliability and security of individual clouds. We are adding multiple levels of redundancy and reliability by making cloud migration and backup easier and faster than is currently possible,” said Evangelos Eleftheriou from IBM.
IBM scientists have developed a software toolkit known as InterCloud Storage (ICStore). This allows storage systems to access and use thirdparty private and public clouds for data migration, backup or even file sharing. ICStore explicitly addresses the challenges of space efficiency, data synchronization, and metadata coordination when storing data redundantly on object storage.
The default storage provider, SoftLayer, an IBM company, utilizes ICStore to enable clients to overcome limits in their cloud storage capacity by dynamically routing to an alternative storage system, such as easily migrating from a remote public-cloud to on-premise private-cloud, optimizing the overall efficiency of data storage management.
