It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Apple introduced the Macintosh, a personal computer that went on to change the face of computing history, and inspire a generation of pioneers, innovators and visionaries to change the world. Thinking back, my first Mac experience was in the early 90’s with the Macintosh II, but it was only in late 2009 that I bought my first Mac, the Mac mini, which continues to work flawlessly. Be sure to turn to page 14 for a brief, but fascinating retrospective on how the Mac shaped the future of personal computing over the years.
No talk of the influence on the computing industry is complete without the mention of the Redmond-based giant, Microsoft. Our feature (“Microsoft’s New Guard”) on page 76 touches on the recent appointment of Satya Nadella as the third Chief Executive Officer in the history of the company, following Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates. Meanwhile, 2014 is also shaping up the be the year of the Chinese smartphone-makers, as “Apple of the East” manufacturer Xiaomi has chosen Singapore as its international headquarters, and is expected to expand into the Malaysian market sometime this year.
