Ed’s Note

THE BIG 3-0

HWM (Malaysia) - - CONTENTS - Michael Low Editor

It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Apple introduced the Macintosh, a personal computer that went on to change the face of computing history, and inspire a generation of pioneers, innovators and visionaries to change the world. Thinking back, my first Mac experience was in the early 90’s with the Macintosh II, but it was only in late 2009 that I bought my first Mac, the Mac mini, which continues to work flawlessly. Be sure to turn to page 14 for a brief, but fascinating retrospective on how the Mac shaped the future of personal computing over the years.

No talk of the influence on the computing industry is complete without the mention of the Redmond-based giant, Microsoft. Our feature (“Microsoft’s New Guard”) on page 76 touches on the recent appointment of Satya Nadella as the third Chief Executive Officer in the history of the company, following Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates. Meanwhile, 2014 is also shaping up the be the year of the Chinese smartphone-makers, as “Apple of the East” manufacturer Xiaomi has chosen Singapore as its international headquarters, and is expected to expand into the Malaysian market sometime this year. For the full story, check out page 71.

For those who are looking to get serious with photography without breaking the bank, we’ve brought together four mirrorless system cameras that we would buy with our own money to help you decide on the models that are considered to offer the best value and performance. Got a new-fangled tablet and having a hard time getting work done? We went hands-on with six essential productivity apps to see what they offer to the discerning users.

Moving along, this issue’s GAX section saw senior writer Bryan Chan regaling us with his memories of Tamriel, having spent many hours adventuring in The Elder Scrolls Online beta. Other issue highlights include interviews with key professionals from HP, Sharp and BitFenix, as well as a fun read on the good, bad and ugly of in-app purchases. Naturally, we also have your favorite HWM sections: Gear for the latest gadgets, Test for in-depth product reviews, Learn for detailed computing and software walkthroughs, as well as Teleport, SMB and Aperture for all things mobile, business and photography.

Have a productive and enjoyable April, and we’ll see you again next month!
