Lenovo Launches VIBE Z
Newest Flagship smartphone lands in Malaysia
Last month, Lenovo launched its latest flagship phone, the Lenovo VIBE Z. Considered to be the company’s first LTE smartphone in Malaysia, the VIBE Z is the next-generation replacement for the company’s previous flagship, the K900.
“We created the new VIBE Z with its elegant design, high performance and custom software so that people can truly have the best smartphone experience now at the speed of LTE,” said Khoo Hung Chuan, Country General Manager, Lenovo Malaysia. “The introduction of the VIBE Z further highlights how the VIBE series has begun to show a real impact in the premium segment of the smartphone market.”
The VIBE Z features a razor-thin profile and is even faster than its predecessor. Aside from the 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 SoC, the smartphone is also built with 2GB RAM, 5.5-inch Full HD multi-touch capacitive display, 16GB internal memory (with no expandable memory), a 3,000mAh battery that Lenovo says will deliver up to 27 days standby and 33 hours talktime, Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), 4G LTE connectivity, a 13MP f/1.8 rear-facing camera and a 5MP 88-degrees wide angle lens.
The front-facing camera on the VIBE Z is actually the highlight of the phone. During the launch, Lenovo had several models going around the floor outside the hallway, taking a few selfies with some of the audience. This minor gimmick was the company’s way of showing off the 5MP sensor that captures photos at a relatively wide angle, which meant that people didn’t have to squeeze so close together.
One issue, however, which was mentioned during a brief Q&A session, actually struck a chord with many of those who were present at the event. According to Lenovo, the VIBE Z will not be getting an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade anytime soon, and the company also stated that they had no plans to do so at present. Then again, Lenovo did use the words ‘anytime soon,’ which means that there is still some time for them to reconsider, or even release it at a later date.
The VIBE Z has been available since March 15, but only to customers looking to buy the device via Celcom. This is because Celcom Axiata Berhad forged an exclusive partnership with Lenovo, which gave them the exclusive sales rights to the VIBE Z for a duration of one month. Additionally, the first 30 customers who purchased the VIBE Z on launch day at Blue Cube @ Sunway were able to do so at prices from as low as RM688.
Those interested in the VIBE Z but don’t want to be tied down with a contract with Celcom, do not fret. Once the exclusivity period ends, the VIBE Z will be made available at all authorized resellers and stores this April 15. The VIBE Z has an RRP of RM1,799 and will be available in either Silver or Titanium.
