OKI Elec­tric In­dus­try was first known as Meikosha Ltd. Es­tab­lished in 1881 by Ki­bataro Oki, it was the first com­pany in Ja­pan to mass pro­duce tele­phones. Af­ter many years spent pro­duc­ing telecommunication de­vices, the com­pany be­gan to fo­cus on pro­duc­ing print­ers and other info-tele­com sys­tems. Through­out the years, the com­pany branched out and cre­ated sis­ter com­pa­nies, one of which is OKI Data Cor­po­ra­tion.

OKI Data Cor­po­ra­tion (OKI Data) was of­fi­cially founded in 1994, and spe­cial­izes in the de­sign, de­vel­op­ment, man­u­fac­ture, and mar­ket­ing of busi­ness print­ing so­lu­tions that em­power or­ga­ni­za­tions to com­mu­ni­cate more ef­fec­tively. To date, this com­pany is known for the pro­duc­tion of award-win­ning print­ing so­lu­tions that in­clude mul­ti­func­tion print­ers, color print­ers, mono print­ers, fax ma­chines and se­rial im­pact dot ma­trix print­ers.

Be­fore OKI Data was founded, OKI Elec­tric In­dus­try had al­ready be­gun build­ing print­ers. The first printer by the com­pany was re­leased in 1964, and it wasn’t un­til 1981 that they in­tro­duced the world’s first LED printer.

To­day, OKI Data op­er­ates in 120 coun­tries and re­gions around the world, and em­ploys more than 5,000 people. Their sales reached JPY117,000 mil­lion for the year that ended on March 31, 2013. They have man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­i­ties in Thai­land, the United King­dom, China, and of course, Ja­pan. Their prod­uct range cov­ers ev­ery­thing from desk­top pub­lish­ing to mul­ti­func­tion print­ers for businesses.
