A STAGE FOR SOUND

Samsung HW-H600 SoundStand

HWM (Malaysia) - - TEST - by Bryan Chan

One of the main issues with using sound bars is that placing them in front of your TVs may block the signal from your remote. Samsung's new HW-H600 SoundStand may just be the perfect solution for this particular problem. We'll give you a tour of this device's features in this review.

In all honesty, the Samsung HW-H600 is basically a slab that looks like an extension of a TV stand. This is great, because it blends in well with any décor you may have and allows you to have a game of “Guess Where the Sound is Coming From” whenever you have guests come over. On a more serious note, the HW-H600 actually looks really unique, to the point that you wouldn't have guessed that it's a full speaker system at first glance. In case you're wondering, yes, this sound stand is able to support the weight of TVs, up to those that are 60-inches in size.

This unique look does more than help with aesthetics actually. Its design actually helps funnel the sound to the front, allowing it to provide loud audio, with minimal effort. Speaking of sound, the HW-H600 has a set of four speakers, as well as an integrated subwoofer. This means that the HW-H600 is more than capable of providing sound that fills an entire living room. Another notable feature of this system is that it has integrated Bluetooth functionality, allowing you to easily pair it with Samsung TVs that support Sound Connect technology, as well as any other mobile device.

In terms of sound quality, the clarity that this sound system has to offer is amazing. In Adele's 'Love Song', the guitars at the beginning sounded extremely clear, while the rest of the song sounded great, with plenty of presence and a respectable amount of soundstaging. We recommend listening to music with the Surround Sound mode switched off, as this will make for a more balanced listening experience.

We then plugged it into a TV, enabled Surround Sound and its Movie audio profile, and watched Pacific Rim. With Surround Sound enabled, the soundstage expanded a little, and the bass was increased tremendously. This provided a decent cinematic experience, but like many sound bars, directional sound is just good and not superb.

To summarize, the Samsung HW-H600 SoundStand is a unique offering from Samsung that's able to output very good audio. It's also priced relatively cheap compared to sound bars, so it makes for a desirable option for anyone looking for a full home theater system replacement.
