Stylish and vibrant, the Pioneer SE-MX7 is as much a statement of fashion and quality as it is a pair of over-the-ear headphones. Durable by design, the rubber-covered headphones is built sturdy and feels good in the hand and over the ears.
The earcups and the adjustable headband are padded with leather-like material that is supple, but stiff. Initially, they felt rather tight when worn for the first time, however, the pads became more comfortable over time. Although the earcups are not big enough to encompass the ear, it provides very good sound isolation as well.
The SE-MX7 comes in four matte colors: black, white, blue, and orange. We really like the detachable cord that comes with the headphones. It is sturdy, tangle-proof, has a built-in microphone and phone controls, and it locks onto the headphones, preventing unwanted disconnects. The volume rocker feels loose at first. With use, however, we find that it is just right and not so tight that you need to click it for it to work.
Although the headphones do not fold, it does come with its own carrying pouch. We would prefer if it came with a sturdier carrying case instead.
Featuring two 40mm drivers for midrange and bass, left and right, the SE-MX7 touts Superior Club Sound and it delivers, albeit with a minor caveat. In our tests, the headphones deliver clean and clear sound as well as you would expect from a pair of headphones of this price and caliber. Even the overall call quality sounds good.
Deep thumping bass rumbles the SE-MX7 without distortion, but those who are not inclined towards hip-hop, dance, and EDM can tone down the bass using the builtin bass level control on the left of the earphones.
What is the caveat, you ask? Although the headphones' sound quality is excellent, we noticed that the sound produced by the SE-MX7 lack warmth and character. It was too clean. It may sound clichéd, but it does boil down to a listener's preference. Do you prefer crystal-clear sound, or prefer the warmth of certain kinds of music?
We would definitely recommend these headphones to music enthusiasts. It has the looks, style and audio quality to back it all up, but at the same time, it may not be for everyone.
