iTouch BoomPlay Neo

HWM (Malaysia) - - TEST - by Ammar Uzair Aminuddin

While we've said this in other reviews in the past, it's a stark reminder that the current market is flooded with all sorts of portable speakers. They come in all shapes, sizes and price. The iTouch BoomPlay Neo is one of the many portable speakers that match price with performance. While it's made in China, we guarantee that such concerns are misplaced when it comes to the BoomPlay Neo. In fact, we were really surprised by its performance and this is the product that we're going to review for this month issue. So, without further ado, let's take a closer look.

From the design aspect, the BoomPlay Neo is a combination of solidity and versatility. It looks sturdy, and its chassis is partly covered with a high quality wooden material that is coated with a seven layer varnish. The frontal speaker houses two 2.25-inch mid-range sound drivers, which is covered with a metal grill. Portability is a chief factor in the BoomPlay Neo's design, as there's also an aluminum handle for those who like to listen to their music on-the-go.

The BoomPlay Neo has quite a few features on it. For starters, it has a superior tempered glass, one-touch media panel, which gives the user access to the speaker's functions, such as power, volume control, and even Bluetooth connectivity. There's even an NFC sensor underneath the speaker too. The BoomPlay Neo also has a massive 4,400mAh battery, meaning that this speaker is capable of providing users with many hours of playback.

To test out the speakers, we paired the BoomPlay Neo with one of our smart devices. Now, while the speakers have Bluetooth connectivity, it's important to note that the BoomPlay Neo is only equipped with Bluetooth v3.0. Once both devices are connected, we were able to stream the music wirelessly. Also, at this point, testing out the speaker's quality through a wireless or wired connection would have made next to no difference, so we went ahead and tested it wirelessly. The speaker's audio performance was surprisingly good; it was crisp and clear for the majority of our songs, which are focused within the mid-pitch and high-pitch scale. This clarity was also achieved, thanks to its built-in HD Digital Signal Processor. The bass also indicated to us that the speaker's low-pitches were deep and punchy due to the integrated 5-inch SuperBass subwoofer.
