ZOOMING IN ON THE DETAILS
Canon PowerShot G3 X
There’s no denying the appeal of compact cameras with high-powered zoom lenses. For one, they let you frame your subject easily, even if you’re on the opposite side of a four-lane highway. While it’s highly unlikely to find an interesting subject on a highway, and not to mention how dangerous it is, the point is that compact zooms give you more framing options without the need to change lenses. One of the latest compact zooms on the market today is the Canon PowerShot G3 X.
The G3 X is equipped with a 20.2MP, 1.0-inch sensor and a lens system that has a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24 to 600 mm. While this isn’t as powerful as Nikon’s P900 (which has a focal range of 24 to 2,000 mm), the range provided is still remarkable. Due to the nature of zoom lenses, the widest aperture ranges from f/2.8 to f/5.6.
Other notable features include a vari-angle LCD screen that can be tilted up 180 degrees (for selfies) and 45 degrees downwards. Needless to say, this feature also makes it easier to add a little more creativity to your composition. Speaking of creativity, the G3 X comes with a host of automated modes and creative filters. These include HDR mode, Star, and a Wink self-timer, among others. These modes make it easier to grab great shots, especially if you’re unsure of the exposure settings. Of course, this camera also has NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities for remote shooting and quick sharing.
When it comes to image quality, the G3 X is capable of capturing a respectable amount of details, thanks to its high MP count. However, due to its 1.0-inch sensor, it’s best not to push ISO settings above ISO 1,250. If you absolutely have to, the maximum is ISO 2,000, and that’s only for online use.
As for the shooting experience, the camera is comfortable to grip and isn’t that heavy, so carrying it around isn’t a chore. It is rather bulky though, but this is understandable because of the large focal range of its lens. In terms of responsiveness though, the camera lags slightly, especially when attempting to change the exposure settings.
Overall, the Canon PowerShot G3 X is a camera that’s equipped with a powerful zoom lens system. It gives you plenty of framing options, and has plenty of automated modes that make it easy to capture great photos. It’s great for the average user, but for enthusiasts, there are better options out there.
