Action-RPG Tower Defense

HWM (Malaysia) - - GAX - SPIN-OFF -

Pair the established genres of Action-RPG with Tower Defense, and what do you get? Well, exactly that! This underrated newcomer genre blends its inspiring genres into an addictively rewarding, teamwork-focused experience. Players hold their line of defense against waves of enemy hordes by building class-specific defensive structures, or even by confronting them directly using heroes in a first- or third-person perspective within the defense maps. The games are packed with RPG elements, such as leveling, looting, pets, and so forth.

This emergent genre was pioneered by Trendy Entertainment’s Dungeon Defenders in 2011, joined swiftly by Coffee Stain Studios’ Sanctum and Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die!, all in the same year. All of these titles have since spawned successful sequels, with Orcs Must Die! 2 released in 2012, Sanctum 2 released in 2013, and Dungeon

Defenders II now on Steam’s Early Access. These have further spawned development activity in the indie scene, such as with CastleStorm, as well as triple-A studio releases like The Mighty Quest for

Epic Loot from Ubisoft Montreal early this year. With games that are relatively casual, highlyaddictive, and ultra-replayable, this niche space is worth keeping a close eye on to see what other cool titles may come about.
