MARTIAL ARTS GALORE
Blade & Soul
THE QUEST FOR VENGEANCE For many, MMORPGs are a means to escape reality and enter a world of fantasy that’s filled with adventure, excitement and camaraderie. Sadly, many modern MMORPGs are mimics of the more successful ones, with little gameplay tweaks to make them exciting. However, one of the MMORPGs to receive significant attention lately is the rather promising
is a game with martial arts elements that are tied to Korean and Chinese culture, which results in a pretty interesting mix. As far as storyline goes, you are the last surviving member of a martial arts school, and you’ve made it your life’s mission to become stronger to defeat the evil that killed your master. VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE As with many MMORPGs, you can customize your avatar’s race and class. In you have the option to choose from four races and seven classes. There are no advantages or disadvantages when selecting any race, but certain classes are only available to certain races. The Blade Dancer, for example, is only available to the Lyn race.
In terms of races, there’s the barbaric-like Gon; the diminutive Lyn; the elf-like Yun; and the humans, who are called Jin. As for classes, there are the Blade Master, Destroyer, Summoner, Force Master, Kung Fu Master, Assassin, and Blade Dancer.
Naturally, each class requires a different approach to combat, but all of them require a good sense of timing. You’ll have to time slashes, punches and counter attacks (or dodges) based on the movement of your enemy, which adds excitement to the overall gameplay. In addition, you can assume the role of a blacksmith, herbalist, among other things, and create items for yourself or other players. Doing so will let you earn more in-game cash at a faster rate. Of course, there are also PvP elements for those who wish to test their skills against human opponents. CERTAIN LIMITATIONS As with any MMORPG, there are elements in that prevent it from becoming truly enjoyable. For a start, the servers are located in North America and Europe. When the servers get crowded, there are spikes of lag, which may cause you to lose a battle or two. Apart from that, there’s also a confusing skill tree – skills are available to use based on context, so you really need to plan which skills to invest in. Finally, in terms of graphics,
looks amazing for an MMORPG, though we think that the characters are too ‘shiny’. Take a look at most
videos on YouTube and you’ll understand. Some players will also appreciate the fact that the game places an emphasis on a certain ‘jiggle’ physics, so in a way, it is a feast for the eyes.
It’s all about the timing in
