As the latest camera to join Sony's mirrorless lineup, fans have understandably high expectations for the considering it's taking over flagship status from the Just what is new though? How about having the world's fastest autofocus system and 425 phase-detection AF points?
The is equipped with a newly developed APS-C sensor, and as mentioned, a beefedup AF system. The can focus on subjects in just 0.05 seconds, and as there are 425 phase-detection AF points on this camera, almost the entire frame is covered. In addition, as the phase-detection AF points are packed so densely together, this camera is purported to have superb tracking performance. During our time with the
we found that the camera lives up to its hype. We tried tracking subjects that were both indoors and outdoors, and 124 HWM | M AY 2 0 1 6 we're happy to report that in both environments, the managed to track subjects easily. It does suffer a little in poorly-lit areas, but when the tracking does work, it works wonderfully. Single-point AF speed and accuracy is also great, with the camera correctly locking onto subjects within the selected AF point nine out of 10 times.
In addition to having a powerful AF system, this camera is also capable of shooting continuously at up to 11 fps, with AF/AE functioning. This makes the an incredibly fast camera that can be used for sports photography without any doubt.
As for image quality, you have 24.2MP at your disposal. Thanks to this, a good amount of details is captured and there's definitely enough resolving power to please pixel peepers. In terms of ISO performance, it's rather impressive for the camera. For print, we'd push it up to ISO 4,000, but for the web, you'd get usable images up to ISO 8,000. It's also worth mentioning that the shoots 4K videos, so there's one less thing to worry about video quality.
Overall, the Sony is undoubtedly a great camera. It's very responsive, has a superb AF system, and offers very good image quality. In terms of usability, it's built much like any other modern camera, so it's pretty comfortable to grip, though the video record button is still awkward to reach. Battery life is also respectable, with us managing to squeeze about 320 shots before it needed a recharge. by
