Return of the stick

HWM (Malaysia) - - SHOWCASE - by Kenny Yeo

The Porsche 911 range is almost unfathomable. There’s the basic Carrera, and then there’s the Carrera S, the Carrera GTS, the Turbo, and the Turbo S. And amongst them, there’s the Cabriolet and the Targa to choose from. Honestly, you need a degree from Porsche to fully understand the entire 911 range.

But, for true-blue driving enthusiasts, there has always only been one model for them and that’s the 911 GT3. It has the perfect blend of driving chops and daily usability, but Porsche did the unthinkable when it refreshed the 911 GT3 in 2013. It was only offered with an automatic transmission. It gets Porsche’s ultra-fast 7-speed PDK gearbox to be exact, but that’s not what purists wanted. They wanted a manual gearbox. You know, the kind where you have to use a clutch and a stick?

Fortunately, Porsche has heard the cries of fans and the latest 911 GT3 will now be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox. But that’s not all, the latest 911 GT3 also has a larger, more powerful engine. The 911 GT3’s engine displacement has been increased to four liters and its internals have also been strengthened. This means the latest 911 GT3 now produces 493hp and can rev to an unbelievable 9,000rpm. Imagine the sound it will make!
